If you are searching for a place where you can view the Atlas mountain range, (the geological backbone of North Africa), the Sahara desert and the Atlantic Ocean all in one sweep of an eye, then the city of Agadir in Morocco is the place to visit for your vacation.

Agadir is a large city located in the S.Western region of Morocco situated about 500Km South of Casablanca and 230Km to the West of Marrakech. Agadir today is also recognized as being the capital of the Moroccan Agadar-Ida Ou Tanane provincial area as well as the capital city of the Souss-Massa-Daa economic zone.

Among the approximate half million inhabitants of the region three languages are spoken including Berber, Arabic, and Ch’leus. During the 1960’s the region was devastated by a huge earthquake, but subsequently has been completely rebuilt with all buildings now able to withstand any future seismic activity.

Agadir is certainly the largest seaside resort in the region and its uniquely mild climate attracts many locals and foreign visitors to enjoy the all year round temperate weather conditions,

Tourism plays a major role in the prosperity of Agadir, but further additions are made to the local economy by such activities as fishing and the export of local produce and natural resources.

Travel and Getting around Agadir

Visiting Agadir represents no problem for air travelers since there are many scheduled flights arriving at the Agadir-Al Massira Airport from all major European cities, though if you are flying in from the USA or Canada you will probably have to change your flight at Casablanca. Transport from the airport is facilitated by taxis which charge 200 Dirham in the daytime, but you will have to pay 300 Dirham if arriving of a night time.

Getting around Agadir is not difficult, though if you want to travel to other cities then please note that there are no train services, but you may find a bus to your destination by visiting the bus station located at the Sahara Hotel parking lot.

Downtown Agadir is flat and easy for walking the clean and safe streets on foot. If a taxi is required you can choose an orange colored Petite taxi (unlike the blue color of other Moroccan city taxis) by picking one up at the Batoir which serves as the main taxi station. But note that the Petite taxis are restricted to operate only within the city limits. If you want to travel further then use one of the larger 6 passenger Grande taxis.

Things to do and Sightseeing in Agadir

You will never be at a loss for things to do and sights to see in and around Agadir unless you simply want to lie on the beach close by many of the first class international hotels.

There are a number of tours you can take under the name of Sahara tours which can be booked for a full day or a half day. Excellent trips can be arranged to visit such spots as the Kasbah village in Tassila about an hours drive away where you can enjoy a typical Berber meal and be entertained by the local people.

The Museum Municipal du Patrimoine Amazigh is well worth seeing with its fine collection of Berber musical instruments, Berber jewelry and traditional clothing articles. Alternatively you may enjoy the Ensemble Artisan which offers many kinds of ironwork, ceramics, painted furniture and other articles produced by the artisans of the region.

Perhaps the best way to see the sites of Agadir is to take a 3 hour guided bus tour of the city where you can enjoy wondrous views of the Marina, the Kasbah stronghold, and perhaps spend a little time viewing the many goods on display on the local Souk (market).

At the end of the day you can simply dress up, and stroll down the Corniche or Promenade and partake in a meal in one of the many restaurants available in the area
